UK VAT Registration

In the United Kingdom your business must apply to be registered for VAT if its annual turnover (within the scope of United Kingdom VAT) exceeds £67,000. Your business may apply for voluntary registration where turnover is below this threshold, if it can demonstrate a commercial reason for requiring VAT registration.

To obtain registration for VAT in the United Kingdom, your company should be able to show that it is making a taxable supply of goods or services in, or from, the United Kingdom; or that it is making supplies abroad that would be taxable if they were made in the United Kingdom.

Once registered for VAT, your company must then complete quarterly VAT returns and, where appropriate, EC sales lists; and you'll need to pay any VAT due to HM Revenue & Customs during the month following the end of the VAT quarter. Remember that penalties are imposed if you submit a late return. Any refunds of VAT due are made directly to the company business bank account.

Once your company is registered for VAT, HM Revenue & Customs can exercise its right of access to its records and books at any time in order to check the accuracy of the VAT returns. This often happens when a repayment is due.
